A natural refuge

Cambutal is a sanctuary where nature unfolds in its purest form. With just 511 inhabitants, it offers a landscape where the mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, creating an ideal environment for those seeking to disconnect and immerse themselves in tropical biodiversity.

The area is surrounded by La Tronosa Forest Reserve and Cerro Hoya National Park, two of Panama's richest and best-preserved ecosystems. These tropical forests are home to a wide variety of species, including birds of all kinds like the Great Green Macaw, howler monkeys, colorful frogs, and exotic butterflies. In addition, the region is home to sea turtles that nest on its beaches, and during the season, humpback whales can be spotted in the nearby waters.

The story

Cambutal is a corregimiento (township) located in the district of Tonosí, in the province of Los Santos, on the southern-most tip of the Azuero Peninsula, Panama. Its name comes from a local river and is believed to derive from the abundance of "cambutes," a mollusk found in the region.

This district was officially established on July 29, 1998, by Law 58, following the declaration of unconstitutionality of Law 1 of 1982. Before its formal creation, Cambutal was a rural community primarily dedicated to fishing and agriculture, with a population that relied on these activities for subsistence. Over the years, the region has maintained its tranquil essence and deep connection with nature.

In recent times, Cambutal has experienced moderate growth in tourism, attracting travelers seeking to escape the urban bustle and immerse themselves in a serene natural environment. Despite this growth, the community has managed to preserve its identity and traditions, offering visitors an authentic and enriching experience.
